A new Canadian study shows the benefits of a pill are worth the risk of having to live an old, baldness-free life.
But is there a drug that will help your head get back on track?
Dr. Marc B. Gomberg, a researcher at the University of Toronto, said in an interview that he is working on the findings from the Canadian study.
"It's a big deal with Viagra and other medications in general," Dr. Gomberg said.
"But it's not that big of a deal. We're talking about getting a prescription for a pill that's available to Canadians," he said.
The study was published in the June issue of the British Medical Journal.
The study found the use of Viagra was associated with an increased risk of developing prostate cancer, which is the most serious form of cancer and one of the most deadly. It was also associated with an increased risk of colon cancer and endometrial cancer.
There were no major side effects on the participants.
But Dr. Gomberg said a pill could have the potential to kill or slow the growth of some cancers.
"It could really slow the cancer growth and that's really interesting," he said.
Gomberg said he does not recommend that the drug be taken by women who don't respond well to a typical pill.
"It's not going to kill you, it's going to slow you down," he said.
The study was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
It found no difference in the rate of breast cancer in the women who took Viagra and the men who were not taking it.
"That was interesting," said Dr. Gomberg. "I think this is very interesting."
The study also was published in The Canadian Medical Journal, and it's a follow-up to previous research.
Gomberg said he is taking a pill to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a condition in which blood pressure is high enough that it makes you faint.
"If you're taking Viagra it could slow down your blood pressure, and I don't know that it's going to cause you to faint," he said.
He said he is not sure about the effect of the drug on other men and women.
"It could be a lot more effective for men and women, but I don't think it's going to cause them to faint," he said.
B. Gomberg said the results would be a good starting point for new treatments.
"I think we need to see how much better it will be for men and women," he said.
Gomberg said there are several other treatments available in Canada that work better, but not the Viagra pill.
"The Viagra pill, though it might be a little different for women, it's a lot more expensive," he said.
Gomberg said he is not sure what the Viagra pill will do to women.
"I don't think it's going to stop the men from getting back on track," he said.
And Dr. Gomberg said he will be working on other research to determine the best time for men to take Viagra.
Gomberg said he is working with a group of scientists to study the effects of Viagra on the men's health and on women.
"I think there's a lot of interest in using Viagra in men who have certain medical conditions that they are not aware of," he said.
In some men, it can cause a range of problems, including the loss of libido, erectile dysfunction, urinary problems, and even breast cancer.
Gomberg said he doesn't see any benefit in using Viagra for erectile dysfunction.
"We don't think that this drug will have any significant benefit for men who are taking it," he said.
For now, he said Viagra should be considered as the first choice of medicine for erectile dysfunction.
"I think the way it works is it works on the brain," he said.
Gomberg said he will continue to monitor for potential side effects and consult with a team of medical experts at the University of Toronto.
Gomberg said he is doing research to see what kind of effect it will have on the men who take Viagra.
